There are various methods for removing a stump yourself, and most of them take a little bit of time to work. Chemical stump removal is a good option if you don’t want to deal with the dangers of fire, or you don’t relish the idea of the physical labor that goes with stump grinding. If you choose this route, it’s easy to find chemical stump removers at a local hardware store or online. Use this handy list to choose the stump killer that’s right for you. Spectracide Stump Remover Granules Spectracide comes in an easy to pour container. It works best on dead, dry stumps. If the stump is fresh, the manufacturer recommends you kill the stump first with an herbicide or brush killer. The stump will quietly decompose over the course of a few weeks to several months. Main ingredient: potassium nitrate. Ferti-Lome Brush Killer Stump Killer Ferti-Lome is a liquid you can spray, paint on, or pour. You can drill holes into the stump before applying the product, or the manufacturer claims you can simply paint Ferti-Lome on the stump. Main ingredients: triclopyr, butoxyethyl ester. Bonide Stump and Vine Killer This product comes with a brush-top applicator so you can apply it right from the bottle. The manufacturer suggests applying it directly to the stump-top. Does not harm surrounding plants. Main ingredient: sodium metabisulfite Pros and Cons of Chemical Stump Killers The great thing about using chemicals to remove a stump is that it is such an easy process, and most of these products are affordable. The downside, of course, is the time it takes for the products to work. Another disadvantage: Using chemicals in your yard poses a risk to children and animals, so be sure to cordon off the tree stump if you think a child might play on it.
