DIY: Ways to Burn a Stump

Welcome back to DIY Ways to Burn a Tree Stump. In the last blog in this series, we discussed a well-known method of stump burning that takes a lot of time and energy. As the well known saying goes, “Ain’t nobody got time for that!”

There is a faster way to burn a stump, but it does require a little more work with a saw, and you’ll need a few special supplies. If the idea of burning a stump in as little as a few days sounds good to you, keep reading.

2. Create a stove to burn the stump.
Supplies needed: Sawzall; 55-gallon barrel, bottom removed; kindling and accelerant
  • Using a Sawzall, cut a square opening in the bottom of the barrel and one in the top.
  • Remove the top of the stump. It’s okay to leave more of the stump intact with this method.
  • Drill 12 inch deep holes into the top of the stump at an angle. You can drill some holes along the bottom of the stump as well.
  • Place the barrel on the top of the stump, then dig a safety moat around the stump. Make sure to clear away debris that could catch on fire.
  • Fill the barrel with kindling and light from the bottom, using an accelerant if desired.
  • Check the stump periodically, adding more kindling as needed. This method should take a day or two to complete.

BE SAFE: Check with your local fire department, and be aware of burn laws in your area before working with fire. There is a risk of creating an underground fire when you burn a tree trunk. To lower this risk, wet the ground around the stump with a hose, and keep it moist through the duration of the fire and smoldering. Put the fire dead-out when it has reached the bottom of the stump.

Which Method Should You Choose?
There are certainly pros and cons to both of these stump burning methods.  For method one, you’ll have to be extremely patient. For the second method, you’ll need a few supplies that not everyone has just laying around. With both methods, you’ll be using fire, which can quickly get out of control if you’re not extremely cautious.
